The borgo has an Italian and a German name. Chiusa is the Italian name deriving from the narrow natural passage located between the cliff of Sabiona, the Isarco river and the Tinne torrent. The German name is Klausen and derives from the Middle High German (the German language between years 1000 and 1300) word kluse<\/em>, meaning \u201cclosed\u201d (\u201cchiusa\u201d in Italian). Since 1300 it has been called Klausen.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Do not miss” tab_id=”1480496820077-2b27c1ff-e93b”][vc_column_text]The long road passing through the borgo is the first attraction of Chiusa. It connects the old center of Citt\u00e0 Alta<\/strong> (the upper borgo) with Citt\u00e0 Bassa<\/strong> (the lower side).<\/p>\n

You can start your visit from the Wegmacher house<\/strong> and the Church of the Apostles<\/strong>, with a Gothic style and a single nave, built by the master builder architect J\u00f6rg in the latter half of the 1400s; the Town Hall<\/strong>, the complex of the old Leone d\u2019Oro hotel<\/strong> (today an elementary school), and the Episcopal Customs Hous<\/strong>e date all back to the late Middle Ages.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0fa\u00e7ade of the Albergo Walther von der Vogelweide<\/strong> with \u00a0its battlements is very peculiar. Another old building is Albergo Agnello<\/strong> (Zum Lamm), first mentioned in 1460. On the first floor there is a room called \u201cWalther Room\u201d, it was the favorite meeting place of internationally famous artists in the second half of 1800.<\/p>\n

The houses in Citt\u00e0 Alta are high and narrow to gain space. There is a romantic view of the river from the back of these houses, with gardens and balconies decked with flowers. Citt\u00e0 Alta ends at Piazza Parrocchia<\/strong>, with the Church of Sant\u2019Andrea<\/strong>, a late Gothic building (1482-98) built over the remains of a former Romanesque building, considered one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in South Tyrol. Opposite the Sagrestano Tower there is the Chapel of the Crypt<\/strong>, built in 1439.<\/p>\n

From Piazza Parrocchia you walk towards the Citt\u00e0 Alta (Lower Town), where you can admire the beautiful signs that marked the hotels. The picturesque alleys here bear the names of the handicrafts.<\/p>\n

Worth of note are the Orso Grigio Hotel<\/strong>, the oldest inn in town (mentioned in 1335); the current home of the Cassa di Risparmio bank, the Caff\u00e8 Nussbaumer (formerly the Croce Bianca Hotel), where during the heyday of the Chiusa artists\u2019 colony there was a special K\u00fcnstlerst\u00fcbele (artists\u2019 room) set up with a unique art gallery.<\/p>\n

Citt\u00e0 Bassa<\/strong> ends at Piazza Tinne. On the other side of the Tinne there is a large public park, where there is the home of the Civic Museum<\/strong> and the Civic Library<\/strong> (formerly a Capuchin convent).<\/p>\n

Worthy of a visit on the east bank of the Isarco are: the Seebegg Residence<\/strong>, once the offices of the mining administration, the Canonica<\/strong> and the Griesbruck Residence<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0 Castel Branzoll on the west bank of the river, along the path that leads to Sabiona.<\/p>\n

The visit continues following an old path with the Stations of the Cross in direction of\u00a0the Convent of Sabiona<\/strong>, this building occupies the upper part of the rock spur overlooking the borgo. The monastery, completed in 1686, rises, with the Church of the Convent and the Church of Santa Croce, on the ruins of a previous complex destroyed by fire in 1533. In the direction of the castle there is the Church of Nostra Signora<\/strong> (1652-58).[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Local products and dishes” tab_id=”1480496816178-4ed93fff-7757″][vc_column_text]Excellent wines can be enjoyed at the Cantina Produttori Valle Isarco.
