\nSull\u2019etimologia del nome ci sono diverse teorie. Le pi\u00f9 accreditate sono:
\nMONS ARCIS \u2013 MONTE FORTE, monte munito di difese;
\nMONS ARCOLO – MONTE DI ARCOLO, il primo condottiero longobardo che fortific\u00f2 il paese con un castello;
\nMONS HERCULIS – MONTE DI ERCOLE, ma non \u00e8 attendibile in quanto nata in epoca risorgimentale e caldeggiata dai patrioti anti clericali che volevano creare una icona pagana.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

La storia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Montesarchio non \u00e8 altro che l\u2019antica Caudium sannita che ebbe parte nella lotta contro Roma e che partecip\u00f2 all\u2019evento famoso delle \u201cforche caudine\u201d.
\nIn seguito diviene citt\u00e0 romana e con l\u2019avvento dei longobardi sposta il suo sito dalla pianura, dove era in origine, alla collina. Il suo territorio \u00e8 attraversato dalla Via Francigena del Sud che segue il tracciato dell\u2019antica Via Appia, prima strada consolare costruita dai Romani nel 312 a.C., per questo detta \u201cregina viarum\u201d.
\nNel territorio di Montesarchio avvenne anche la battaglia che sanc\u00ec il passaggio del potere dai longobardi ai normanni con il combattimento e la morte dell\u2019ultimo duca longobardo, Pandolfo IV.
\nIl castello di Montesarchio di forte valenza strategica ha rivestito nei secoli il ruolo di castello reale passando dal potere longobardo, ai normanni, agli svevi, agli angioini e agli aragonesi. Detto castello \u00e8 stato sempre gestito da un fedelissimo della corona in quel momento imperante, avendo diritto anche alle esazioni doganali su frumento, vino e olio provenienti dalla Puglia verso il Regno di Napoli.
\nBorgo significativamente fortificato ha visto nei secoli diversi aggiornamenti del suo castello e della sua torre. L\u2019ultimo importante rifacimento risale al fine del XV sec. ed \u00e8 attribuibile all\u2019architetto Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
\nI personaggi pi\u00f9 storicamente rilevanti sono i Principi di casa d\u2019Avalos, illustre famiglia proveniente dalla Castiglia (Spagna) trasferita nel Napoletano nel XV secolo al seguito di Re Alfonso I\u00b0 d\u2019Aragona.
\nI d\u2019Avalos dettero al paese una forte connotazione commerciale (tuttora sussistente), istituendo due fiere settimanali che in passato erano le pi\u00f9 importanti del circondario.
\nTra gli altri personaggi storici del paese si ricorda fra Gerolamo da Montesarchio, al secolo Giannantonio Cioffi, nato a Montesarchio nel 1615, diviene frate cappuccino, part\u00ec missionario ed \u00e8 stato per certo il primo europeo ad oltrepassare i confini settentrionali del Congo.
\nTra i vari personaggi di passaggio lungo la via Francigena si annovera San Francesco che \u00e8 passato per Montesarchio ben due volte. Difatti fu costruito un convento francescano che oggi \u00e8 sede del comune.
\nMontesarchio ospita l\u2019unico palazzo in Italia fuori delle propriet\u00e0 papali ove sia stata effettuata una \u201cbenedizione urbi et orbi\u201d da un Papa. Nella fattispecie Benedetto XIII (Orsini) nel maggio 1727 in occasione della sua visita pastorale a Benevento. L\u2019Orsini, da vescovo, era stato per alcuni mesi ospite del Principe di Montesarchio in quanto convalescente a causa dell\u2019infermit\u00e0 riportate in occasione del terremoto che aveva colpito Benevento nel 1688. Tale soggiorno leg\u00f2 affettivamente il Pontefice alla citt\u00e0 di Montesarchio.
\nNello stesso palazzo, propriet\u00e0 del principe D\u2019Avalos, sito in piazza Umberto I\u00b0, nel 1792 fu ospitato Gustav Mauritz barone di Armfelt (Svezia) che fu generale diplomatico e politico svedese considerato uno dei padri rifondatori della sua patria. L\u2019ospitalit\u00e0 fu data al barone in quel momento diplomatico presso la Corte di Napoli per ripararlo da un mandato di cattura emesso dalla stessa Svezia al barone momentaneamente in disgrazia.
\nGenius loci di Montesarchio che appare anche nello stemma comunale \u00e8 Ercole.
\nTale personaggio fu scelto a simbolo dei patrioti per l\u2019Unit\u00e0 d\u2019Italia che a Montesarchio avevano una forte rappresentanza e che facevano capo a tre grandi \u201cvendite carbonare\u201d: la Erennio, la Deucalione e la San Teobaldo. Dopo l\u2019Unit\u00e0, tale simbolo dilaga come mito paesano tanto da costruire una fontana monumentale sita in Piazza Umberto I\u00b0, detta comunemente \u201cMunt Ercole\u201d. La cosa fu tanto pi\u00f9 avvalorata dal fatto che nella fonetica popolare Mons Arcolo era deformata appunto in \u201cMunt Ercole\u201d, pertanto si \u00e8 prestato molto a questo mito risorgimentale che nasceva nelle \u201cAccademie del libero pensiero\u201d.<\/p>\n

La peculiarit\u00e0 pi\u00f9 interessante di Montesarchio \u00e8 che i suoi borghi sono ben distinti per epoche storiche:
\n\u2022 LATOVETERE, periodo Longobardo
\n\u2022 LATONUOVO, periodo Normanno
\n\u2022 CAPPELLA, periodo Aragonese
\n\u2022 BORGO SAN FRANCESCO, periodo Angioino
\n\u2022 SANTO SPIRITO e parte bassa, dal 1600 ai nostri giorni
\nQuesti quartieri sono arricchiti da palazzi nobiliari con fattura d\u2019epoca e chiese pubbliche e private.
\nIl paese, nella parte bassa, sorge a circa 300 metri sul livello del mare per estendersi alla sua altezza apicale \u201ctorre\u201d a circa 420 metri.
\nLo slogan del borgo \u00e8 HERCULES ALEXICACOS inteso come nume tutelare e custode delle propriet\u00e0 ed inoltre allontanatore dei mali dalla comunit\u00e0.
\nQuesto motto appare nello stemma stesso del comune con l\u2019immagine dell\u2019eroe mitologico che brandisce una clava.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Do not miss” tab_id=”1480496820077-2b27c1ff-e93b”][vc_column_text]The first thing that strikes the traveller approaching Montesarchio is the splendid panorama of the borgo stretching around the hill, overlooked by the Tower and the Castle.<\/p>\n

The Castle shows various architectural testimonials embracing a period of 1000 years. The original implant dates back to the Longobard period, \u00a0when all the dominations have left their distinguished signs, century after century. The last important renovation was made at the end of the XV century by the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini.<\/p>\n

The Tower was the strength of the defensive walls that surrounded the borgo. The actual configuration dates back to the late XV\u2019s , work of the architect Martini.. In its structure one of the former forms of \u201cTorre a mandorla\u201d style can be recognized, whose invention is attributed to the same architect.<\/p>\n

Latotevere<\/em> district dates back to the Longobard period; here you can find one of the few churches left, dating back to the VIII century. It maintains its original topography and the two gateways, the oriental and the occidental one. Here you can also admire the Abbey of San Nicola, dating back to the XIII century. Inside, a beautiful altar painting by Giovan Bernardo Lama and the statue of St.Nicholas.<\/p>\n

Latonuovo<\/em> is the district dating back to the Norman period and retains one of the gateways and a section of the walls of the same period. In this district you may visit the Sanctuary of SS Trinit\u00e0, with its original statue representing the Trinity Mistery.<\/p>\n

Cappella<\/em>: this district derives its name from a former Church dedicated to the Worship of S. Michele Arcangelo. Here it is still visible the ancient Caracciolo Palace.<\/p>\n

The Convent of the Franciscan Friars: here you can admire table paintings dating back to the XIV century, as well as frescoed lunettes overhanging the main doors. Inside is a small cloister and the monumental tomb of a captain.<\/p>\n

The Convent of the Poor Claires is worth of a note for its walkway under the roof . The entrance is embellished by a Baroque Portal.<\/p>\n

Borgo San Francesco: the fulcrum of this hamlet is represented by the Municipal building, a former Franciscan convent. Inside there is a large cloister and a monumental baroque entrance that accesses the upper floors. Worth a visit is the nearby church of San Francesco, whose implant dates back to 1300.<\/p>\n

Piazza Umberto I: in this square you can admire the seventeenth-century Palazzo D’Avalos with an adjoining chapel (today a parish) entitled to the Madonna della Purit\u00e0 and San Leone Magno. In the southern side of the square rises the seventeenth church of the Annunziata, on whose highest altar there is a canvas donated by Cardinal Orsini, then Pope Benedict XIII.<\/p>\n

Torre dell\u2019Orologio: the tower was built at the beginning of the eighteenth century with the economic contribution of the marquis Anna De Guevara, consort of Prince of Avalos, to give shelter to pilgrims on the Via Francigena.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Local products and dishes” tab_id=”1480496816178-4ed93fff-7757″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

The products of excellence of the borgo can be identified among the selective fruit and vegetable productions: \u00a0oil (among other things, here is one of Europe’s largest oil mills producer of several famous brands); the renowned Aglianico and Falanghina vineyards, some of the best Italian wines both with DOC brands produced by one of the most important Italian wineries. Falanghina is a straw-yellow wine with greenish reflections, pearly scents of perfume, floral notes of jasmine and broom. Aglianico is a vigorous, dark red wine with scents of wildlife, blueberries, red plum jam. Dense, and persistent.<\/p>\n

The territory also offers cold cuts, honey, fruit and vegetables.<\/p>\n
