The name derives from Bovillae<\/em>, an ancient Volscian or Oscan-Samnite town, afterwards Roman, so called after the cult of the god Bove (Bovis Villae\u00a0= city of ox).\u00a0 The adjective Ernica<\/em> was added in 1907,\u00a0to distinguish the town from another one with the same name and also to underline\u00a0the relationship with the Hernici, an ancient population of Lazio Region. From the middle\u00a0age until 1907, the borgo was called Bauco, which derives from baculus, <\/em>probably referring to the landowner\u2019s name; another hypothesis says it could derive from the word\u00a0buca<\/em> (\u201chole\u201d) due to the presence of caves in the soil.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Do not miss” tab_id=”1480496820077-2b27c1ff-e93b”][vc_column_text]You can start exploring the historic centre of Boville, with its\u00a0dense network of streets, alleys and\u00a0squares, from Porta\u00a0San Nicola: here the massive\u00a0city walls and its towers suddenly attract our attention. In\u00a0Via Roma, you can admire Palazzo\u00a0Liberati, then going through Via della Ripresa you\u2019ll reach Palazzo Filonardi,\u00a0the largest architectural complex of the borgo; the palace is adorned\u00a0with splendid portals, three mullioned\u00a0windows, valuable floors\u00a0and monumental staircases. Palazzo\u00a0Filonardi was erected on an ancient\u00a0castle by Cardinal Ennio Filonardi\u00a0for the vacation of the papal court,\u00a0and dedicated to the benefactor Pope\u00a0Paul III in 1532. The author of such\u00a0beauty was the famous Renaissance\u00a0architect Jacopo Barozzi, known as\u00a0\u201cIl Vignola\u201d, whose style can be recognized on\u00a0the portal. Part of the Palazzo Filonardi\u2019s complex is the abbey\u00a0of San Pietro Ispano. It\u00a0was probably built on the place where\u00a0the hermit lived once he arrived\u00a0from Spain after fighting the Moors\u00a0(X or XI century). The crypt was built over the Saint\u2019s grotto; the\u00a0Simoncelli\u2019s chapel preserves some of\u00a0the most precious artworks coming from the \u00a0ancient\u00a0Constantinian basilica of San\u00a0Pietro in Vaticano: the Angel by Giotto, the only mosaic work by the\u00a0Florentine artist that has survived to\u00a0modern times; a marble basrelief of the\u00a0Madonna del Sansovino, a silver bust\u00a0attributed to Benvenuto Cellini containing\u00a0the relics of San Pietro Ispanico\u00a0and a porphyry cross walled into\u00a0the wall dating back to the fourteenth\u00a0century. An early Christian\u00a0sarcophagus (330-350 a.d.) with a special basrelief decoration, found in 1941 among fields of the Sasso suburb, has been recently added. Going on to Cor\u00adso Umberto I we find the Church of Battista, opened to wor\u00adship in the 1633 (now desecrated), which houses a fresco representing the Bap\u00adtism of Christ by Domenichino. On the same street we can also admire Palazzo Simoncelli (XVII century) erected by the homonymous prelate, today the seat of the Town Hall; the elegant Palazzo De Angelis belonged to the family of the writer and poet Desi\u00adderio. Arriving to Piazza Sant\u2019Angelo, you can see the Palaces Emilio and Velio Filonardi (XV century) and, on the other side the collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo; the buil\u00adding is a eighteenth century recon\u00adstruction by Giuseppe Subleyras, of a previous worship place already mentioned in a document dating back to the 1125. The church houses the tomb of the Cardinal Ennio Filo\u00adnardi, a fine St. Sebastiano by Ca\u00advalier d\u2019Arpino and other remarkable paintings of various ages, including an Addolorata by Antonio Cavalluc\u00adci (XVIII century). Walking from Piazza Sant\u2019An\u00adgelo towards via Capo Croce, you arrive at Piazza Santo Stefano, whe\u00adre the Church houses many pain\u00adtings by the school of Bologna, and Palazzo Bulgarini. Further down, towards Piazza San Francesco, we can admire the Bulgarini tower, the church of San Francesco (currently an exhibition hall) and the monastery of San Francesco. Some fine fresco\u00ades dating back to the XIII-XV century, and some others of Byzantine style emerged during the renovation of the church; there is also a cycle attributed to a pupil of Giotto (XIV century). Going on along via Nuova, until via Tritoni, you\u2019ll get to Piazza Santa Maria where the church of Santa Maria, the tower and Palazzo Cometti Vizzardelli (XVIII century) are located. Porta Santa Maria leads you out of the town centre. The tour, however, is not over, since you can walk along the medieval walls and towers, up to the square of the ancient washtub, then to Por\u00adta San Francesco that is annexed to the convent on its left, and finally to another smaller gateway, the Posterula, with its staircase. From here the walk can continue around the walls overlo\u00adoking the landscape hills of Ciociaria.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Local products and dishes” tab_id=”1480496816178-4ed93fff-7757″][vc_column_text]Among the few handcrafts that survive\u00a0in Boville there is embroidery, an art spread by Benedictine nuns, who\u00a0still produce trousseau, linens and layettes using needle\u00a0and thread.<\/p>\n

The olive oil from the olive groves of Ciociaria is the basis of traditional dishes such as baked lamb with potatoes, which is eaten in Boville in the Easter period, polenta with vegetables or with sausages and beans, or timballo alla baucana<\/em>, which is prepared in an original way.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Gallery” tab_id=”1483439233392-93f02a55-763a”][vc_column_text]
