Its main square, Piazza Maggiore, is decorated with an 18th-century octagonal fountain that bears the coats of arms of the Prince Bishop of Trento, the City and the Habsburg Imperial Eagle. Other 18th century fountains have, over time, replaced the rustic wooden drinking troughs. They include small masterpieces such as the Fountain of the Snakes along the path that winds between elegant 18th century houses and sacred buildings. Under the borgo\u2019s 15th century arcades, the heads of families once gathered to make important community decisions. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta stands out for its Gothic style, consecrated in 1184 by the Bishop of Feltre and rebuilt in 1400. It houses an 18th century Baroque altar where light dances from the stained-glass windows donated by the local lords. The Church of San Sebastiano was built after the plague of 1457. The borgo\u2019s most illustrious son is Alcide De Gasperi, politician, prime minister, and leader of the nation\u2019s reconstruction after World War II. Among the inspirers of the European Union, his childhood home has now become the Alcide De Gasperi Museum. The Garden of Europe, with a circular path through woods, meadows and peat bogs, is a tribute to the statesman and a symbol of a united Europe. The Lectio Degasperiana, 15-16 August: the festival celebrates a different aspect of Trentino and Italian history every year.<\/p>\n
