The ancient and historic borgo of Bassano in Teverina is set high on a spur of rock overlooking the Tiber Valley. It has been inhabited since the time of the Etruscans. Its picturesque medieval historic core, built with stones and blocks of peperino marble, has a herringbone layout. Located in the lower part of the borgo are the ancient citadel with its towers and bastions, cobbled streets and arches, a 16th century fountain and an imposing defensive tower, Torre dell’Orologio. This tower has a 18th-century hand-painted majolica clock that surprisingly hides the 11th-century Romanesque bell tower of the Church of Santa Maria dei Lumi, the only example of its kind worldwide. Built in the 12th century, the church houses important frescoes and paintings.

Typical local products include excellent DOC and IGT wines. Maritozzi, buns with raisins, are the local speciality.

  • Alla Corte di Alfonso De Lagnis”, second weekend of July, a historical re-enactment including a procession in Renaissance clothing of the court of Alfonso De Lagnis’ who ruled Bassano in the 16th
  • Living Nativity Scene: all the costumes and furnishings are carefully designed. Every Christmas thousands of people come to attend this event.
