Lo spirito del luogo

SCHEGGINO is the diminutive of scheggia, which identifies a boulder or a rock. The toponym is mentioned in the RATIONES DECIMARUM of Umbria (1333), and derives from the rocky spur on which the village of Scheggino was built.

Scheggino is a characteristic triangular-shaped hillside castle, dominated at the highest point by the tower of the medieval fortress, in white and pink stone, about 20 meters high. The perimeter of the walls is still preserved and you can also recognize the remains of the perimeter walls of the Romanesque church of San Silvestro, which was destroyed; a few years ago the Superintendency found, studied and catalogued the remains of Romanesque columns which they named the Temple of San Silvestro, presuming that, in ancient times, a temple was placed there in honor of the same saint to whom the church inside the castle was dedicated.  – the Church of San Nicola, dating back to the 13th century and dedicated to the patron saint of Scheggino. Its existence has been documented since 1210 as a church dependent on the Benedictine abbey of Sassovivo.  – Church of San Nicola: Fresco painting cycle on the apse wall from the early sixteenth century, with “Coronation of Mary” and “Nativity”, commissioned to Giovanni di Pietro known as Lo Spagna.  – Just outside the ancient village is the Church of San Rocco, with a typical Romanesque construction and a facade oblique to the road axis. It is located on the old road that led to Sant’Anatolia di Narco, presumably with the aim of protecting and keeping the plague out of the castle. It is characterized by a bell gable, with a coat of arms carved on the architrave of the portal flanked by small windows.  – Valcasana Park: a green oasis in the middle of waterways and ponds. Ideal in the summer

TRUFFLE is the royal and typical product of the village of Scheggino. It is prepared in a thousand ways: in Stracciata with truffle, grated on homemade pasta: tagliatelle or stringozzi… and in many other condiments.

TROUT is the other typical dish of the place. The Nera river which represents, in addition to the truffle, the true wealth of Scheggino provides a delicious fish with a pleasant taste.
