Starting from the seaside you’ll find the port, it is operative since the Roman era. The church in the square near the port seems to defend the borgo from the sea waves. Dedicated to Saint Margaret, the church was built in Gothic-Ligurian style. It has two unusual features: the octagonal tower (40 mt high) and the entrance, located in the apse side rather than in the façade side. It houses a splendid 15th century gothic tabernacle.The cylindrical watchtower of the ancient Doria castle, and the square tower are all that remains of the ancient defensive buildings of the Republic of Genoa.There are terraced houses typical of seaside villages and in the upper part of Vernazza there are porticoes, arcades and narrow streets.A path will lead you to the sanctuary of the Madonna di Reggio, built in the 11th century and housing a black Madonna.

Per il resto, Vernazza, oltre alle tipiche case a schiera dei borghi marinari, germogliate l’una dall’altra in funzione difensiva, presenta nella parte alta dell’abitato loggiati, porticati, vicoli stretti e ripidi sormontati da archi collegati con scale che conducono ad altre scale.
I carruggi illuminati dal sole e le case sembrano quasi bramare l’acqua, sporgersi e tuffarsi dentro di essa. Dalla piazzetta si diramano sentieri tra i più belli delle Cinque Terre, in particolare quelli che conducono al santuario della Madonna di Reggio, sorto nel sec. XI, con la sua Madonna nera che si vuole portata dai Crociati, e a quello di San Bernardino, da cui si gode un panorama che spazia dalla Corsica alle Alpi Marittime.
Nel borgo di Corniglia, raggiungibile attraverso un sentiero panoramico, è da vedere la chiesa di San Pietro (1334) di aspetto gotico-ligure, con fonte battesimale del XII sec. e facciata con rosone in marmo bianco di Carrara. Intorno, vegetazione mediterranea, cielo, mare e la chiara felicità della riviera.

The borgo produces excellent red and white wines. The local dishes are: trofie with pesto (local pasta with pesto, basil, olive oil and pinenuts) and the tian Vernazza, a dish made with anchovies, tomatoes and potatoes.
