Located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Bellano is crossed by the cold Pioverna torrent and the famous hiking trail known as the Sentieri del Viandante (Wayfayer’s Path). This fishing village’s picturesque setting has captivated artists, musicians, actors, and literary figures alike. With origins dating back to the year 905, Bellano occupied an important position in the area during the 14th and 15th centuries. The city walls, the palaces, the Parish Church and the presence of school communities suggest that the borgo enjoyed a certain prestige and drew attention from powerful neighbours, such as the Venetians, who plundered it in 1447. Today the territory of Bellano, in addition to the historic centre and the coastal hamlets, includes three mountain pastures, seven villages, the twelve churches of Val Muggiasca and a narrow valley along the ridge of Mount Muggio. The view from Mount Muggio sweeps over the Valsassina, the Valtellina, the lakes of Como and Lugano and, on clear days, includes Monte Rosa. Among the churches of the Val Muggiasca, in Vendrogno, there are those of Sant’Antonio Abate and San Lorenzo: the first built in 1362 and with 16th century frescoes, the other with a Baroque façade and a Romanesque bell tower.

Local specialities include: lake fish risotto, fish in carpione (fried then marinated in white wine vinegar and herbs), miascia (a cake made with stale bread and raisins), nusìt (fried and sugar dusted dough balls), pàtoi (ravioli filled with slow cooked beef) and olive oil.

La Pesa Vegia, 5th January: an historical re-enactment with sets, beautiful costumes and over 200 extras celebrating a declaration of 1605 when old Spanish units of measurement were restored.  Agoni in Contrada, July: a culinary festival dedicated to the fish symbol of the lake, the agone (twaite shad).
