Lo spirito del luogo

Ceriana is an ancient town and was founded in Roman times by the Coelii family with the name Coeliana. Thanks to its strategic position, it became a military settlement with a watchtower and a temple dedicated to Apollo. Between the 9th and 10th centuries, the village resisted Saracen and Barbary attacks thanks to its fortifications.
The first official documents date back to the year 1000, when Ceriana was part of the domains of the Counts of Ventimiglia. In 1038 it passed under the bishop of Genoa, becoming a rural county and remaining linked to the archdiocese until 1297, when it was sold to the Genoese lords Oberto Doria and Giorgio De Mari. In 1359 it finally passed under the control of the Republic of Genoa.
During the Genoese rule, heavy taxes and ecclesiastical tithes caused discontent, leading to the separation from San Romolo in 1538 and the adoption of local statutes. In 1625 it passed briefly to the Savoy, but returned to Genoa, sparking a popular revolt in 1729. Between 1794 and 1797 it was occupied by French troops and, after the fall of the Republic of Genoa, it entered the Ligurian Republic and then the First French Empire (1805-1814). After the Congress of Vienna (1814), it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia and, from 1861, it became part of the Kingdom of Italy, returning to the province of Porto Maurizio.
