On a promontory between the sea and sky, Monte Sant’Angelo boasts two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo and the Umbra Forest. The Sanctuary was built in the 5th century where, according to tradition, the Archangel Michael made three apparitions. Through a bronze door made in Constantinople in 1076, you enter into the dimly lit nave, which leads to the cave where the saint appeared. A must for pilgrims to the Holy Land, the sanctuary preserves the traces of their passage: crosses, Longobard inscriptions and even runic epigraphs, traced by Anglo-Saxon pilgrims. Just 15km from the golden beaches of Gargano, the 10.500 hectares of Foresta Umbra is a pristine, almost mountainous, habitat protecting rare fauna and flora. The borgo developed around the Norman-Swabian Sanctuary, transforming the caves of the shepherds scattered among the cliffs of the mountain, in the white-plastered terraced houses of the Junno district. The entrance to the borgo is in the shadow of the imposing Angevin octagonal bell tower completed in 1274. Many the wonders from church to church, like the unique baptistery of San Giovanni in Tumba with the echoes of the East and the Romanesque-Swabian Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. Finally, the Norman-Swabian castle with the Aragonese towers stands on the borgo’s highest point.

The Sanctuary of San Michele is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Longobards in Italy, Places of Power, that comprises seven groups of important buildings (fortresses, churches, and monasteries) throughout Italy.

Local specialities include Monte Sant’Angelo bread, one of the most prized in Italy. It goes well with the caciocavallo podolico cheese and extra virgin olive oil. Other products include kid and lamb served with the pancotto (stale bread cooked in a hot broth flavoured with wild vegetables, tomato and potatoes).

  • Easter week: the rites of Holy Week are represented in four events that culminate in the Procession of the Christ on the Cross.
  • September is the month dedicated to the historical re-enactment of the apparitions of Saint Michael the Archangel with costumed actors, and the Procession of the Sacred Sword of Saint Michael.
