Lo spirito del luogo

Caccuri rises on a rock spur that overlooks the river Neto, between the Sila mountain and the Ionian sea. In the long summer evenings, families and friends gather to chat in its characteristic small squares. This borgo is a labyrinth of alleys and streets that lead to the castle, from which you can enjoy a vast panorama: from the hills dotted with olive trees, the area’s great wealth, along the coast up to the city of Crotone. The borgo retains all the charm of the past and protects religious treasures and defensive fortresses, all to be discovered by strolling through its streets. Located at the highest point, the castle was a symbol of the power of the feudal lords who governed the town. First the Ruffo family, then the Cavalcanti dynasty who wanted to give prestige to its territory. The fascinating castle was gradually transformed into an elegant residence, undergoing important architectural interventions and adding magnificent rooms and fine furnishings. Inside, the Palatine Chapel preserves the late 17th century aspect of the last renovation made with paintings by the Neapolitan school. The crenellated medieval Mastrigli tower was actually added in the 19th century to hide a water tank. The complex of the abbey of Santa Maria del Soccorso, an ancient Dominican convent, is just beneath the castle, the adjacent 14th century church has one nave, a wooden ceiling and many altars and statues

Calzone with sardella is a rolled pizza filled with sardella, a tomato and whitebait paste. The typical Christmas cake is pitta ‘mpigliata, made with sheets of pasta, dried fruit and nuts.

  • Patronal feast of San Rocco, from 14th to 16th
  • Autumn festival in the borgo’s castle, on the last week of October.
  • Pork Festival, in early January.
